Sauna with swimwear or without? How the rules work in the spas we list
In short: In the Nude sauna filter, “yes” means at least the sauna is swimwear-free (the pools are usually swimwear-only), “yes, in pools too” means the pools are swimwear-free as well, in part of the site, at certain hours or everywhere, and “no” means we found no swimwear-free sauna. Real house rules often have exceptions, so the operator's own rules always decide.
The answer to “swimwear or not?” often changes inside a single spa: you dress one way for the pool and another for the sauna. That is why our Nude sauna filter separates three situations. This article explains what they mean, using the operators' own rules, and how to use them when choosing.
What the filter values mean
Across the 31 spas in our list it works out like this:
- No (13 spas): we found no swimwear-free sauna. That does not mean there is no sauna: twelve of the thirteen have one. The thirteenth is a head spa with no pool or sauna. For some spas, such as Gołębiewski, the operator publishes no sauna rules at all.
- Yes (18 spas): no swimwear in the saunas. In 14 of them the pools are swimwear-only as a rule. Exceptions include Termy Bania (swimwear is allowed in the Saunarium too) and pools inside the sauna area, which are often swimwear-free as well.
- Yes, in pools too (4 spas, also counted under “yes”): the pools are swimwear-free as well, in part of the site (Therme Erding, Linsberg Asia), at certain hours (Klosterlausnitz) or everywhere (Vabali).
Examples from the operators' rules
No: we found no swimwear-free sauna
- QC Terme Bagni Vecchi (Bormio). The access rules say to wear a swimsuit at all times and to use a towel inside the saunas (2026 rules).
- Széchenyi (Budapest). Only swimwear made for swimming is allowed in the pools, except the plunge pool next to the Főnix sauna, which may be used without swimwear during sauna programmes. Bare skin must not touch the sauna bench, so you lay down a towel or sheet. Only during the guided sauna programmes are the sauna and showers swimwear-free, and even then a sheet or towel is required (FAQ, sauna programmes).
- Rudas (Budapest). The shared Turkish bath is “in bathing suit”. On men-only and women-only days, though, two aprons covering the intimate areas and the buttocks are compulsory (opening hours, house-rules annex).
Yes: no swimwear in the sauna, swimwear in the pool
- Infinit Maximus (Brno). Swimwear belongs in the pools (the operator calls them thermal pools), while saunas are used without it, mainly for hygiene reasons. A sheet and a towel are lent as part of the entry price, and in common areas guests cover up (FAQ).
- Therme Laa (Austria). The Saunawelt is run as a nude area, and swimwear is allowed only in the textile sauna in the public thermal section. A towel goes under you in every cabin except the steam bath, and swimwear is compulsory in the pools (house rules).
- Termy Bania (Białka Tatrzańska). The exception: in the Saunarium (16+) guests may move around in swimwear, in a towel or pareo, or nude. Dry saunas require a towel or pareo, and anyone in swimwear is told to expect nude guests. Elsewhere in the complex swimwear is compulsory (price list, rules).
Yes, in pools too: swimwear-free, but check how far that goes
- Vabali Spa Berlin. Swimwear is not allowed anywhere in the facility. Saunas and pools are entered unclothed, and a bathrobe is compulsory outside them (FAQ).
- Kristall Therme Bad Klosterlausnitz. From 12:00 the pools are swimwear-free, on Wednesdays and Sundays you may bathe with or without swimwear all day (including the 3% brine pool), and from 9 to 12, according to the text of the page, it is optional only in the wave pool and the current channel. The saunas are always entered without clothing (visitor information).
- Therme Erding. On findspa.app it sits under “yes, in pools too” because its pools are swimwear-free as well, but only in part of the site: the operator names only the VitalTherme & Saunen area (16+) as the textile-free zone. Swimwear applies elsewhere, and guests who want to sauna in swimwear go to the textile saunas of the neighbouring VitalOase, which is also 16+ (house rules, FAQ). Linsberg Asia is similar: you enter a designated zone with saunas, steam baths and pools unclothed, while the other pools require swimwear (house rules). So “pools too” does not necessarily mean “everywhere”.
How to read the filters on the site
Nude sauna takes one value at a time and can be combined with the other filters: “yes” together with the Pool button shows spas that have a pool and a swimwear-free sauna. “Yes, in pools too” is a narrower choice, where the pools are swimwear-free as well. On a spa card you recognise it by the Nude sauna tag, which every spa with “yes” carries, and the Nudity row holds a short note. On the spa's profile, the Amenities section has a Nude sauna row with the detail.
Amenities are buttons you can combine: a spa must have everything you pick, and the number on each button shows how many places match. A missing item does not prove the spa lacks it, the operator may simply not have said. Combining Sauna with “no” shows spas that have a sauna but where we found no nude one.
Small points of etiquette, from the operators
These are things the operators themselves write in their rules:
- A towel under your whole body. Endemit asks for a sauna sheet under the whole body, Therme Erding for a large towel including your feet, and Klosterlausnitz for a towel under the whole body.
- Phones and photos. Vabali asks you to switch your phone off and lock it in your locker, Erding bans using smartphones, taking photos and filming in the swimwear-free zone, and Lukács (Budapest) bans photographing or filming other guests in its naturist sauna.
- Cover up outside the sauna. Vabali asks for a bathrobe in the restaurant and lounges, Erding for a robe or towel after bathing.
- Shower first. QC Terme Bagni Vecchi requires a shower before entering the wellness areas, and the Saunarium at Termy Bania requires you to wash before entering.
Rules change. This overview is based on the operators' websites as of October 2026. An operator can amend its rules or introduce days in swimwear only, as Klosterlausnitz's rules expressly allow. The operator's own page always decides; our listings are only a guide.
Frequently asked questions
Does “yes” mean I have to be naked in the sauna?
Not always literally: in the examples here the operators ban swimwear and ask for a sheet or towel under your body, but Termy Bania lets guests in its Saunarium zone wear swimwear, a towel or nothing, so the house rules of the spa you visit decide.
Do I need swimwear for a spa with a swimwear-free sauna?
For spas with “yes” but not “yes, in pools too”, as a rule yes: Infinit Maximus, Therme Laa and Endemit require swimwear in the pools and only the saunas are swimwear-free. At Vabali Spa Berlin, by contrast, swimwear is not allowed anywhere, so read the house rules before you pack.
How current are the rules on findspa.app?
They are a guide, based on operators' websites as of October 2026. Operators change their rules and may introduce exceptions, such as family days in swimwear only, so check the operator's site, linked as Operator website on each profile, before you travel.
What next
No pool, no sauna: a head spa in Ostrava
Harmony Haven Spa in Ostrava-Vítkovice is a Japanese head spa: an individual treatment by appointment, with no pool or sauna, so the swimwear rules for pools and saunas in this article do not apply there. The operator of this website runs the spa, which is why its presentation on findspa.app is labelled as an ad.
